Johnson-Cole Signs
for Palace
By Mary Graham - 9th March 2010
Another young footballer, whose talent has been honed in Maidstone has
come to the attention of a professional club.Just weeks after former Maidstone
United defender Chris Smalling signed for Manchester United comes news
of a professional club offering a scholarship to another of the clubs
young stars.William Johnson Cole, 15, from Gravesend, (pictured left in
the yellow shirt) has just been offered a full term scholarship with championship
club, Crystal Palace, meaning he will be there until he is at least 18.
The striker has played
for the Stones for the past two years, scoring 35 goals last season and
winning the Kent League Sportsmanship award. He had already signed a two-year
deal with Crystal Palace, but was told on Friday about the scholarship.
Crystal Palace will now be responsible for his training and development. The
Stones youth development manager, Sean Sutton, said: "I am confident
William could go all the way if he gets the opportunities and the right
doors open for him."He could get a first team place one day through
this scholarship, all he needs to do is stay fit, play well and keep scoring
goals."William is obviously delighted with the offer as are we at
Maidstone United as he is yet another player we have moved on to a professional
club."We hope he goes on to follows in the footsteps of Chris Smalling
who played for us and recently signed for Manchester Utd."

Kent
Disability League
 |
After
the first round of matches the under 16
championship section of the Kent Disability league already has a familiar
look with Maidstone United on top after 5 games. The under
16 league section is notable for the fact that the Stones have an all
girls team playing in a boys league, where they have made a very creditable
start with 2 wins out of 5. The under
13s section sees the Stones second on goal difference to Charlton, both
having beaten each other to inflict their only defeat. In the under
11 section the Stones are also second to Charlton having lost one game
more but with a vastly superior goal difference. |

Congratulation to
Maidstone Utd U15's forward William Johnson Cole who has today been given
a two year deal with Championship Side Crystal Palace.
U15's team manager
Sean Sutton said "Although it's a great loss for us as a team we are
all very pleased for Will. He was spotted by Palace scout Bernie Dillon
at one of our home games who then approached me and offered Will the chance
of a trial. I had a good feeling that he would make it, he is a nice boy
with a good attitude and he scores goals for fun. The U15's Manager at
Crystal Palace kept me informed of his progress throughout the trial in
which Will has played five matches and scored four goals. I have spoken
to Will today who is obviously very please to have been given this opportunity
and appreciates his time and all the help he received at Maidstone Utd."
"So therefore our best wishes go with him for the future from the
U15's squad and the management and coaching staff of Maidstone Utd."

Chris Smalling Interview
|
If
any of Maidstone United's young players from the youngest of the Pebbles,
at 5 or 6 years old still too young to be playing competitively, right through
the age groups up to the under 18s playing in the Kent and Ryman youth leagues,
are in need of inspiration, then they need look no further than former Stones
youth player Chris Smalling to see what can be achieved.
Two years ago Chris
was playing for the under 18s in both the Kent Youth League and Ryman Youth
League, turning out against the likes of Tonbridge, Lordswood, Dover and
Horsham. He had also played a number of games for the reserves and had
just been called up by England Schoolboys. Two years on, after a sustained
spell in the first team and the England Schools setup, and a season with
Fulham reserves he is now a member of the Fulham first team squad, having
made his debut as a substitute against Everton at the end of last season.
He was an integral part of the England under 20 team and has been called
up to Stuart Pearce's England under 21 squad where he made his debut as
a substitute in the recent 0-0 draw with Holland.
Darren Lovell caught up with Chris at the club's presentation evening and
asked him about his meteoric rise. The following interview is also available
in written form in the matchday magazine for the recent Ryman Premier opener
against Carshalton Athletic.
