Maidstone United Rangers 4 - 3 Generation Sport (Dover)
Sunday 7th February 2010
Kent Junior Sunday Trophy - 5th Round

Having negotiated the four regional rounds of the Kent Junior Trophy, on Sunday Maidstone United Rangers hosted Generation Sport from Dover in the first county wide round.

The vistors were a very young fast passing team and The Stones needed to organise their game plan very quickly. This they did and thankfully it paid dividends in the 13th minute as Adam Porter was on target when through one on one with the keeper. Within 10 minutes Steve Simmonds added a second for the home side with an easy tap in after Martin Batten had made all the running down the right side.

This jogged Generation into gear and they started pressurising and through some solid tackling forced the ball through the home keeper’s crouched body in the 33rd minute. The game totally opened up then which allowed Maidstone to attack swiftly with some well worked moves and saw the visitors passing the ball round well but not making it count in the final third of the pitch.

With half time looming The Stones increased their lead in the 42 minute breaking quickly with Martin Batten deservedly making the score sheet with a well worked goal. However they weren't finished and just before the half time whistle Rob Jacobs placed the ball beautifully past the keeper's outstretched hands and into the top right hand corner to give The Stones a 4-1 half time lead.

It was Generation Sport who came out to quickest after the break and settled on a more solid and physical game which had Maidstone sitting back and letting the game come to them. They were rewarded for their attacking play with a second goal in the 66th minute which lifted their spirits and had Maidstone looking shell shocked. The hosts were able to break a few times but were shooting wide and even had the ball hit the upright and roll along the goal line before seeing the ball put out for a corner. Generation sport definitely had more running and a third goal in the 85th minute had them fired up for the remaining minutes. however The Stones were able to see out the remaining time, including a seemingly endless 10 minutes of added time, to see them through to the last eight.
